Sneak preview of the card. I assume that no one is yet looking at the page, so it’s really just a sneak preview for myself.

Fran Words

without comments

I am reading a book by Fran Lebowitz called Metropolitan Life and am enjoying it a bunch. She’s hilarious. My favorite words/phrases she’s used so far:

  • madcap
  • peripherally
  • rapport
  • wintering
  • empress dowager
  • interlude
  • forced labor

She’s famous, I believe. So maybe you all know about her. I bet it’s more likely that you’ve HEARD of her, but don’t really know her. She’s funny in a way that a lot of New Yorkers probably imagine themselves being – curmedgeonly and brilliant. I bet she never went twenty-four hours without being called curmudgeonly. It probably annoyed her. But it’s true, Fran! Sorry! She writes in a way that’s familiar, but I bet it’s because a lot of people either copy her, or do a lesser job of her disdainful tone without even having read her.

Anyway, here’s a paragraph I liked, and you can just decide for yourself. From “MY DAY: An introduction of sorts”:

“9:05pm – I go to dinner with a group of people that includes two fashion models, a fashion photographer, a fashion photographer’s representative, and an art director. I occupy myself almost entirely with the art director — drawn to him largely because he knows the most words.”

That last bit is the funniest part, but my favorites are the segments “occupy myself almost entirely” and also “drawn to him largely because.” That’s good stuff!

Oh, man! I just found her essay on race in our country! So great! I’m not even sure I agree with it, but you can’t disagree that it’s powerful, probably because states Actual Opinions and backs them up with Specific Examples and Phrases.

Met Los Bros; Red Sox Won

with one comment

Hey! I cleaned up the “Right Brain” section. It’s a lot closer to what I wanted.

Also…

  • I met The Hernandez Brothers, creators of my favorite comic of all time, Love and Rockets. They were cool.
    Los Bros and Will
  • The Red Sox won the World Series. Kevin and I watched it happen at McManus.
    Sox Win
  • Monkeydick has a weekly show on Fridays at 11pm.
