Apple Hipped Me

I went to the Apple store and they were able to update my iPod with no trouble. Fascinating. I came home and tried a new firewire cable. Same problem. Weird. Why would it work so well at the Apple store? Seriously, I’m compelled. I might have to haul in my iMac and iPod to the store and beg them to figure it out.

Also, because of their testing, I left the Apple store with 110 songs from the Apple store music catalog. It was a frustratingly hip selection — not too young, not too stale, not too smart, but definitely hip — songs from The Thievery Corporation, Justin Timberlake, Jay Farrar, Allison Krause. I looked at the list with loating of [...]

iPod People

I’m going to try and return my iPod today. It actually has worked very well, and I use it HEAVILY, like more than I use many of my internal organs (like whichever internal organ is used to process information from non-comic book printed materal — that organ I don’t use very much). But in my attempts to reformat it to a Mac-based iPod, neither Windows or Mac will deal with it. So I think the hard drive within is on the fritz.

And for you non-tech people: one of my cats is currently sitting on my head.

And for you non-tech, non-kitten people: it’s a nice day outside, but I wore a thick coat anyway and pretended I was in high school [...]

Saw Sin City — very fun. I remember when the comic came out and thinking that Frank Miller had finally lost his mind, and had finally given in to every weak impulse in his noir-loving soul — producing a story so absurdly violent and horrible that no one could take it seriously. But rather than make his stories worse, it made them better. The man who made The Dark Knight Returns wasn’t getting too gritty when he made Batman and malicious snarling vigilante — he wasn’t gritty ENOUGH. Of course!

Also, my headlight burned out about a month ago. I’ve already gotten one ticket for it, after which I dutifully bought a new headlight and dutifully put it on my back [...]

People say “Will, love the blog entries, but where are your opinions about the Red Sox? And where is the update on what you’re doing with your iMac?”

I’m sorry, friends. I’ve been selfish, holding back that info on you. Here you go:

  • The Yankees beat the Red Sox last night in the first game of the 2005 baseball season, 9-2. It always sucks losing to the Yankees, but you might ask: Is it easier, having won the World Series last year, and having beaten the pants off the Yankees in the playoffs? And the answer is: Yes, absolutely. A lot of the sting is gone. And the teams are decently even, so it’s going to be a fun season. Kevin and [...]

New Love and Rockets!

L&R #13

Went to St. Mark’s Comics yesterday. I hadn’t been to a comic shop in a while and to my delight there was a slew of new Hernandez Brothers stuff: three solo issues from Gilbert (Luba #9 and #10, as well as Luba Comics and Stories #5 or something) plus a new Love and Rockets loaded with stuff of Jaime’s. PLUS it seems I MISSED an issue of Love and Rockets — usually hard to do since they seem to come out every five months. But they seem to be producing them faster these days. “Faster” = five a year?

So I’ve been reading Love and Rockets nonstop since 1987. It’s strange having read a [...]

Art and stuff

Visited art galleries yesterday. I have heard of such things, and have heard of my friends visiting them, but it was my first time taking an afternoon and actually trucking through a series of tiny to medium-sized galleries in Chelsea. It was great fun, and more importantly — a lot more fun than trudging through the enormous museums like the Met or the Museum of Natural History. They shouldn’t take high school students to the Met. It’s austere and imposing and no fun. Take them to Chelsea, and they can see that someone’s art gallery exhibit consists of a for-real survival buggy, equipped with fire extinguisher, ammunition and a thick, original instruction guide to surviving nuclear fallout and post-apocolyptic windstorms. [...]
