What Songs, Will?

What songs, Will Hines? What songs have you listened to again and again, with little to no explanation lately?

“My City of Ruins” and “The Ties That Bind” by Bruce Springsteen.
“A Little Respect” by Erasure
“Drift Away” by Dobie Gray
“Amie” by Pure Prarie League

God bless them all, these songs.

  1. Rob W

Jesus, I heard “Amie” 3 times this weekend. What strikes me about it is that it is such a non-commited love song. e.g. “Amie . . . I guess I could be with you for a while”. Wow! Such a strong statement of love!

If you liked Amie, you may also like these other “Love” songs for commitment-phobes:

Love the One You’re With (as in “if you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with”.)

Torn Between Two Lovers. Okay, you want to keep sleeping with the one guy, but the other guy gives you something different and you don’t want to give it up? I guess that’s cool.

  2. Will

Or “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.”

Really, the only reason I’m listening to Amie, I believe, is becuase 1) It was in the Freaks and Geeks episode I watched with Eliza this past weekend. I scrambled to the liner notes to see what it was called. Months ago I tried to find it online, but couldn’t — and that’s because it’s spelled “Amie” and not “Amy.”

More to the point, it’s about the harmony, not the half-hearted promise. It’s so much fun to sing along with Amie that I almost want to run to a bar and get drunk just to be in the right frame of mind to belt it out.

  3. Erik

This weekend, I was listening to Warren Zevon’s “Keep Me In Your Heart” which has the plea for not very long-term commitment from a dying man:

“Shadows are falling and I’m running out of breath
Keep me in your heart for a while..”

(Just for a while… also, he was dying of lung cancer, which makes the first line darkly funny.)

  4. eliza

I can’t stop listening to “Baby We’re The Same” by Matthew Sweet and “Cherry Pie” by Warrant. Apparently I have a conflicted inner monologue, with a catchy soundtrack.

  5. Brian

We’re The Same is a great song.

  6. Kate

Oooh! What Freaks and Geeks episode????

  7. Will

I think it was “The Garage Door” — the one where we meet Neil’s Dad. It’s definitely the one where you meet Amy, the tuba player, which is I assume why this one had that song. I hadn’t seen it since I first watched all the episodes. Goddamn is it good! At this point in the series — like episode 10 of 15 or something? — they were hitting on all cylinders.

  8. Patbaer

I can’t stop listening to “Time to Cut the Bullshit” by Rob Schrab and Liam Lynch . For those with no idea what I’m talking about, it’s a song featured in the Channel 101 classic “Twigger’s Holiday”.

  9. tony

Can I still recommend world-changing albums?

    The Warlocks: “Surgery”

Also, whenever I hear GBV’s “The Best of Jill Hives,” I mind-sing the line “The best of Will Hines.”

It got worse after Will told me that he and his brothers exchanged “Best of [fill-in-the-blank] Hines” mix CDs.

  11. Brian

The Best of Will Hines vol 1 and 2 are solid collections.

  12. Erik

I am listening to “Maggie’s Farm” live from the 1965 Newport Folk Festival off the “No Direction Home” soundtrack. It’s got the same iconoclastic energy of the 1966 ‘Judas’ version of “Like a Rolling Stone” but the musicianship is also amazing on its own.

I also really like “Moonshiner” from the 1962 “Live at the Gaslight” CD that I bought at Starbucks.

Yes, I listen to music from Starbucks.

  13. dunford

I just listened to “So. Central Rain” by REM. How very very very haunting.
