Eliza and I went to Film Forum to watch a collection of short cartoons, presented under the banner Cartoons: No laughing matter. I usually hate when cartoons/comics take a defensive posture right from the get-go, but the Film Forum picks good stuff, so we went.
Twas not good.
Channel 102 and Channel 101 have spoiled me, and taught me — that there’s a way to cut your film down to five minutes and still have it be good. You don’t need to linger over your precious special effects, cartoons! I don’t need to hear that sad accordian music you have playing for another ten minutes while your stop-motion baby doll gets scared by growling wallpaper for 18 minutes. And it doesn’t to all be about your goddamned depressing childhoods and your terrible parents! Oooh, so bold! You showed yourself as a misunderstood kid! OOOOOOOOOH! I don’t even give a crap if you’re right! Quit whining! DO SOMETHING, CARTOONS! DO SOMETHING!
A lot of it did LOOK good, though. But that’s not enough!
Separate: Finished Philip K. Dick’s Ubik today. THAT is a fun book.

What are your thoughts on Anime?
GO!

I have not seen enough anime to totally know. Dyna Moe has shown me some stuff. What strikes me as most strange is the weird mixture of totally innocent icons with bizarre sexuality. I’m thinking of one where women have to fight in public, and if you lose your punishement is revealing your breasts to the crowd, which totally humiliates you. That was a cartoon.
It DID move quickly, though. Got right to it. No lingering on the breasts or any other atmospheric element.
They seem to require the viewer to really be up on the continuity of what’s going on. Again, that’s based on a very very very small sample set.

True.
As a suggestion, I’d recommend the following not-so-demeaning to women series:
-Cowboy Bebop
-Samurai Champloo
-Ninja Scroll (the movie, not the series)
-Paranoia Agent
Netflix ahoy!

You should have seen “Army of Shadows” instead.
Did you get the preview for the Leonard Cohen doc? I hope the movie isn’t just two hours of chumps like Bono and Rufus Wainright ruining his songs.
