- Great interview with Alex Cox, the co-owner of Rocketship Comics, the coolest-sounding comics store ever. He talks about why they don’t have back issues, why their signings rarely feature superhero creators, the direct sales market and which books are surprisingly good sellers. Who knew that All-Star Superman was so reliable?

- The Red Sox have a great infield defense this year for the first time since maybe forever.
- I’m halfway through The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. It takes a while to get going, but I’m digging it now.
- Can’t stop rewatching the “Franklin” episodes of Arrested Development. Only one episode behind on Lost. Have never seen 24. Haven’t watched The Sopranos since season 3, but that’s only because I cancelled cable. Old episodes of Moonlighting are dated, but still fun.
- I helped a homeless-looking fella carry his cart up the steps of Lorimer St. station yesterday. He said “That’s what I would have done!” For a moment, I was hoping he was a super-powerfull jinni disguised as a vagrant waiting for someone to demonstrate compassion so that he could grant unimaginable powers, but he was just a dude.

The Sox infield is amazing, even when they switch out Gonzalez for Cora! And I love Lowell, especially when you can compare him to A-Rod when they play the Yanks.
I don’t even know where to start with Youkilis.
If you had been granted unimagnable powers it stands to reason that you would not have been able to figure out how to use them.

It took me forever to get through the Wind-up Bird Chronicle, but I really enjoyed it. Have you gotten to the Lieutenant’s story yet? Probably one of the most horrifying passages I’ve ever read. Yikes.

Yep, I’ve gotten by that part. Everyone I mention this book to responds with a comment about that story, and that story comes pretty early in the book. It’s a testament to how powerful that section is.

RE: The Wind-up Bird Chronicle: I actually stopped reading it when I got to the lieutenant’s story because I got distracted by something shiny. I’ll have to get back to that book before Will’s web site ruins something for me.
RE: The Homeless Guy: How nice of you to help him with his cart, regardless of whether you thought he was God in disguise.
RE: Lost: Weirder and weirder is all I can say until you catch up.

Last year, when I told my brother I had read “A Wild Sheep Chase,” he immediately responded “The best part of that book is that page with the picture of the sheep. I remember I burst out laughing when I got there.”
I didn’t remember that part, and our conversation died then and there.
Much later, I looked in a bookstore and found that the current Vintage paperback has an illustration (presumably also in the original) that my first, early translation copy doesn’t have. (I bought mine at a used bookstore - I wasn’t an early Murakami adapter.)
I haven’t talked to my brother since.
