I got a new television: a 23″ HD flat-screen (via LCD technology, not plasma).
This was originally just one point among several in this post, but the purchase of a new television has garnered more interest than anything else in my life so I thought I would separate it out into its own post. A little tiny kingdom in my blog, just to commemorate that I’ve bought a television. People are fascinated by televisions, especially when you start throwing around terms like “flat screen” and “high-def.” I feel like I had a baby, everyone around me is so happy.
Let me spell this out: I don’t know anything about television. I bought my last TV in 1996 and it was beat-up then. Still, I only got rid of it because it started emitting a high-pitched squeal after being on for five minutes. I could smack the sides of it to make the squal go away for a few minutes. It was like watching a television with a snooze alarm. So I know this new set is better if only because it doesn’t hurt my ears.
It’s a flat-screen, which is cool. But that’s mostly cool because it takes up less room on my TV stand, which means I can pile more books there before I get around to re-filing them onto my shelves. It’s high-definition, theoretically, but since I don’t have cable or a new DVD player — I’m not going to SEE any high-definition. Unless my old VHS copy of Hooisers has a high-def option I’m not aware of.
I bought this television for one reason: because Terry Jinn told me to. He knows electronics and televisions in particular. He could have pointed me to a pile of clay and I would have bought it sight unseen. He pointed me to Samsung, so here we are!
Come on over sometime and watch my new tv.

You should christen it with something awesome to you like a Woody Allen movie.
I’m planning to pop-in “Yi Yi” first when I get my next TV.

Excellent choice.
Though you now join the ranks of “people I’m jealous of because they have an HD tv”.

I steered you toward Samsung because it fit your budget. I could have steered you into “bankruptcy”, which has great picture quality and stunning sound.
By the way, I am going to calibrate the shit out of that new TV!

Terry Jinn is always right.
And he calibrates the shit out of a new TV.

I’m more surprised you don’t have a DVD player… when you have a wall full of DVDs

He has an old DVD player. He doesn’t have a -new- DVD player (as in upconverting to 720p or 1080i over HDMI). However, such a DVD player won’t do true HiDef. It just scales up regular (standard definition) DVDs. You’ll need an HD DVD player (or Blu-Ray player) for true HD.
Will might be enjoying a new DVD player soon.
