An Honest Haircut
Brian and I call short haircuts “honest” because they reveal how far your hair has receded. He emailed me a few weeks ago to tell me that he had given himself the most honest haircut he had ever received. The email had a photo attached which showed his skull nearly but not quite shaved — indeed, the most sincere I had ever seen his hair. I responded that my hair could stand to be a bit more truthful. So I went to Astor Place and thumped down the stairs and had them clipper my hair to a decently genuine shortness. It’s jarring to have your hair cut shorter, but it does feel clean and neat.
I got one of my shortest haircuts ever this week too.

Welcome to the club, I wish I could get my hair to just stay short all the time.

Just get your own clippers Jim. Once a week, it takes 5-10 minutes for upkeep.
We start at IBM next Monday. We’re going to carpool in our Buick!

I’ve had my own clippers for years. What I want is to splice in a gene that will keep my hair right at 3/8″.

I thought your haircut looked very good, Will. Regardless of the honesty, some people just look better with very short, neat haircuts. On the flip side, I’m really enjoying Ptolemy’s hair a little bit long, and that is certainly a less than honest haircut.

Dear Will,
Isn’t there is a point though when a haircut is TOO short and therefore becomes dishonest again? A total shave is obviously dishonest. Please draw the line somewhere by making your definition a bit more specific. The public awaits your mandate.
