I got nothing folks. Here’s some things I considered blogging about:
- The best Chaplin movie to watch if you’ve only got time for one is City Lights.
- The best blog out there is kottke.org. You all probably knew that.
- For Christmas, among many other good gifts, I got the entire Love and Rockets series in their new small softcover format. Beautiful! Start with “Heartbreak Soup” and then “The Girl From H.O.P.P.E.R.S” if you’re new.
- I’ve had two impressive nights of over-drinking recently. During one of them, Mark Ruffalo and Ethan Hawke entered the bar, but I was more focused on getting Ben Schwartz to notice I was flipping him off. At the other, I promised a friend I would burn him a selection of the seven best Smiths songs. “But I don’t want any. You alone brought this up.” he answered. Nonetheless. Also why, when drunk, do I believe that “People will think it’s funny if I’m a complete dick right now.” Resolutions, anyone?
- DeCoster and I had the best audience reaction yet to our sketch show last Thursday. That was fun.
- Kevin and I are in cagematch again on Thursday. We have a new video ready to go!
- Terry Jinn got me some copies of BSG season 3, thank the gods. I watched four episodes last night.
- A restaurant very near me includes “fried chicken and waffles” as a brunch item. I predict fatness.
- I don’t use My Fellow Jerks anymore since Google Reader is easier. But it still gets a few hundred hits a day so I’m leaving it.

CATS!

Google Reader is fantastic. It helps me keep tabs on New York comedy and cat photos.
I should really subscribe to actual news blogs.

We haven’t gotten drunk in a while. I’m disappointed.

“Vicar In A Tutu” 7 times. Never fails.
Jan 3rd, 2008 at 2:37 pm
FACT: vicar in a tutu is the only smiths song i know.
RUMOR: i am a hopeless, classless idiot.
DOUBLE FACT: fried chicken is awesome.

I picked:
This Charming Man
Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now
William, It Was Really Nothing
Bigmouth Strikes Again
Ask
The Boy With The Thorn In His Side
Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want

That’s harder than I though it would be, but:
Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me
How Soon is Now?
Panic
Reel Around the Fountain
Ask
The Queen is Dead
There is a Light That Never Goes Out
And yes, that joke is still funny anymore.

I think that for a first-time listener, ‘How Soon Is Now?’ is too long. And ‘Panic’ too repetitive. I mean, they’re both great — but if I have to pick only 7 — my goal is to hook the person to come back for more.

Oh, I was still creating my list when you posted yours. I respect your decision. Throw a dart to a wall of their song titles and you’ve probably got a pretty good list.
BTW - is The Smiths the official band of UCB teachers? Certainly seems that way.

1. Panic
2. This Charming Man
3. Bigmouth Strikes Again
4. This Night Has Opened My Eyes
5. London
6. That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore
7. Girlfriend in a Coma
I had a hell of a time not including Morrissey’s solo work:
1. Last of the Famous International Playboys
2. Suedehead
3. Irish Blood, English Heart
4. First of the Gang To Die
5. November Spawned A Monster
6. Hairdresser On Fire
7. Everyday Is Like Sunday

I’d rather eat Morrissey’s ridiculous pompadour than ever listen to “How Soon Is Now” ever, ever again.
I like many other Smiths songs, though.
