GOOD GUESS
A MAN is standing on a corner in a park. A SECOND MAN
approaches.
SECOND MAN
Guess what number I'm thinking of.
MAN
The number 76.
SECOND MAN
That is correct.
MAN
But that's not all you're thinking of. You're thinking how
the color of the leaves at this time of year are very unique -- just a tinge of
orange arond the edges as they begin to fully turn. And how this orange outline
is in a many ways the most beautiful phase of the leaves turning, but it's the
phase that exists for the shortest amount of time. These orange-rimmed leaves
here will be a completely differently color even by tomorrow morning. And you
remember noticing that last year and realizing that you probably have not
thought about that at all in the intervening year. And you were wondering how
many memories are like that -- buried but dormant, waiting to be awoken --
ready to surprise you with their vibrancy. And you're thinking that a lot of
things that seem lost to you might be re-born again at surprising times when
the right scent or color or feeling provokes it back into your conscious brain.
SECOND MAN
No I wasn't thinking that.
MAN
Oh, what were you thinking?
SECOND MAN
About how I like pancakes.
MAN
Same thing.
