Rocco and I are in Toronto shooting another round of commercials for BrightHouse Networks. We had done the first round in March. Tonight, we walked along College St. and had pizza at Vivoli’s, which was good.
Speaking of pizza, 37 signals has a great post about Domenico DeMarco, who’s made pretty much every pizza in his restaurant by hand for the past 40 years. Ptolemy introduced this place to me. It’s way out in Brooklyn — you have to take the subway to a bus to get there — and once you’re there, you wait an hour at least for this amazingly slow-moving man to make your pizza. But the whole time you’re watching him do it, you wonder [...]
The panel above is one of my favorites in all the comics I’ve read. It’s on the last page of Zot! issue #12 (published circa 1985) where Zot, a superhero from a alternate reality Earth where everything is perfect, kisses Jenny, a “normal” girl from our Earth. It was sweet, optimistic and refreshingly NORMAL. Why did Spider-Man so often turn away from Mary Jane? Shouldn’t the hero be happy to have a girlfriend, and just kiss her? Zot and Jenny were in love and so they kissed each other. It shouldn’t have been a big deal, but at that time, it was. Comics never ended simply or sweetly. [...]
My brothers and my recreation of us in Superman underoos has made it on to the hallowed pages of neatorama.com, a site I just discovered when Jon Gabrus sent me this link.

Courtesy of an Xmas gift from Hines Bro Brian, I had a royal shave at an Art of Shaving store last Friday.

I’ve had a straight razor shave once before: when I returned from Japan and had to go from the airport to the UCB Theatre to perform in Rob Lathan’s “one-man” show (also featuring myself and John Gemberling) — I had 2 hours to kill. To keep me from falling prey to jet lag, I had a shave at a barber shop. It works, although it is completely harrowing. I keep thinking of Sweeney Todd and how easily these people really could completely murder you with that unguarded super-sharp razor rubbing right near your jugular [...]

Happy birthday Brian Hines! Both Kevin and Brian are Pisces. Make what assumptions you will, astrologists.
Things that exist in the mind of all Hines brothers and likely few other sets of three people: the image of Zot!, Booyar, the landscape of Clapboard Ridge, They Might Be Giants as seen through a net at Toad’s Place in New Haven, The movie Batman as seen at the Palace Theater on Main Street Danbury, Outer Limits Comics, The Pembroke Panthers and Spite Magazine.
Canada + Cleveland + Connecticut = wryness off the muthaeffin charts!
[funnyordie 8212431415 nolink]Kevin and I made this video (thank you Cat for filming) and showed it at our Cagematch two weeks ago. Previously, our videos had been deliberately overly-cute montages of our childhood photos. This was more of a sketch and even though it went over well, it’s probably not as appealing as photos of Kevin at the age of 12 holding a model of a solar system in our kitchen.
Still, I was glad to do it. For Christmas, Kevin had received a DVD of the He-Man Christmas Special. Brilliantly, they include a montage of the morals that ended each He-Man episode. Watching just the morals — all stilted and weird — was hilarious! I really wanted [...]

The Brothers Hines are in Cagematch tonight, facing weekend powerhouse Reuben Williams! It’s gonna be fun. We have a new video which you will enjoy. For a couple of dudes in their 30s, we’re pretty adorable so there’s that. If you do come out, I ask only that you vote your conscience, but bear this in mind: I hereby promise that anyone who votes for us will be put on a Harold team tomorrow. So if we beat Reuben Williams 40 to 30, for example, fwand might have 48 members on it by end of day tomorrow.
Separately, I left my keys at home last night, and had to wake up my thousand-year-old landlady at [...]
I got nothing folks. Here’s some things I considered blogging about:
- The best Chaplin movie to watch if you’ve only got time for one is City Lights.
- The best blog out there is kottke.org. You all probably knew that.
- For Christmas, among many other good gifts, I got the entire Love and Rockets series in their new small softcover format. Beautiful! Start with “Heartbreak Soup” and then “The Girl From H.O.P.P.E.R.S” if you’re new.
- I’ve had two impressive nights of over-drinking recently. During one of them, Mark Ruffalo and Ethan Hawke entered the bar, but I was more focused on getting Ben Schwartz to notice I was flipping him off. At the other, I promised a friend I would [...]
Hines Xmas 2007 was a success. Booyar’s gift to Kevin was a DVD of the He-Man/She-Ra Christmas special, which apparently is the movie that Booyar’s family gathers to watch each holiday season.

Oh, who’s Booyar? Booyar is the last name (edited: Brian points out it was his first name) of some actual dirtbag kid that went to junior high with Hines Bros Kevin and Brian. He was in 9th grade for most of the time they were in junior high. Some years ago, Brian decided that Booyar and Kevin had been best friends and that indeed Booyar still missed Kevin. So Kevin started receiving birthday cards, emails and even pager messages from Booyar — none [...]
