Cakey!

Cakey! The Cake From Outer Space is now on Superdeluxe. Cakey’s debut at Channel 102 is one of my favorite moments. It was a good sized crowd at Anthology Theater and the episode starts. By the time the OPENING credits were rolling, people were cheering as if Cakey! The Cake From Outer Space was a long-beloved character of American culture. Really fun. Cakey was a huge smash there — crowds cheered and gasped at every episode. At that time, each Channel 102 screening would end with episodes from Cakey and Puppet Rapist — a nice one-two punch of brutal cuteness.

Dear lord! Check out the second-to-last ever Peanuts strip: Peppermint Patty alone in the rain wanting to play football only to realize that everyone has gone home! (Via Mike Lynch Cartoons). Click the thumbnail above to read it!

Drawn by a dying cartoonist! I can’t say it enough: Peanuts was a miracle. “You should go home, sir. It’s getting dark.” Good God! Anyway, the next volume of The Complete Peanuts will be out soon. Kevin, John Reynolds, Terry Jinn — let us all buy this. Edited to add: And Porter! Porter, I associate you with Bloom County first, and now that I articulate that I have no idea [...]

Geekery

If you using Final Cut 6 on your new iMac G5 (intel chip) to import footage and having trouble with log and capture — try disconnecting all external drives. Use only one firewire port and that’s for your camera. It seems to help.

Jaime Hernandez interview (thx Dyna).

What the frak has happened on Battlestar Galactica? (8 minute seasons 1-3 wrapup) (thx Mike Still)

Harpooned; Stand-Up

DeCoster and Hines - Harpooned

DeCoster and I represent the UCB’s commitment to new comedy in today’s issue of AM New York. Above is from our sketch “Harpooned” which opens Seven Fights. Thanks to Dyna for making that harpoon look pretty good! We’re not credited in the caption so I will do that here: “Matt DeCoster questions why Will Hines won’t comment on allegations that he has been harpooned.”

Separately, I’m doing stand-up tonight at 8pm at Pianos. Come check me out, friends.

Wednesday Round-Up

  • Here’s a fun review of Jaime Hernandez’ latest collection, The Education of Hopey Glass.
  • A fun project to do would be to show my favorite comics panels of all time. I’d scan the panels and list the title and date published — but not offer any context to the story at all. Just one per story. That would be fun. I might do that.
  • My old improv team 1985 went to a karaoke club last night. New song I take away: Major Tom, by Peter Schilling as introduced to me by Risa Sang-Urai. Birch [...]

YouTube - Link to Connery And Danza

Here’s Connery and Danza. Why did I do this? After Rob and I did Kerry On two years ago, one of the biggest comments I heard was “That guy’s John Kerry impression isn’t that great” which bothered me because I had DIRECTED Rob to not do the impression well. I prefer “bad” impressions.

So I decided to make a show where there was absolutely no question that the impressions were not supposed to be on point. I also cynically believed that people are SUCH slaves to pop culture references that just by [...]

This one is so strange, I bet even Sue Galloway will shake her head. It’s “The Fightin’ George Orwells” which I was going to submit to Channel 102, but it ended up being too nuts even for that admittedly lenient arena. I had just read Orwell’s Down and Out In Paris and London and then re-read 1984 and was obsessed with creating a weird distorted view of those worlds. Basically, I like to do adaptations as if they were being done by non-English speaking Eastern bloc directors who are told only the titles of what they are supposed [...]

Brutal!

LodestoneThis is a horrible photo of myself and James Williamson. I know James better as “Brutal” which is the handle he used on the message board of my old webzine Spite Magazine. He’s a smart funny guy and was one of the few we’d let write articles for us. Actually, for a thrown-together, infrequently-updated, vaguely-defined humor magazine, Spite had a fervent message board community. I was part of it from roughly 1997 through 2001, then had to detach myself because I’d feel too guilty about not having updated Spite. Much of that community still converses online, which is cool.

Brutal first started working for his current company Lodestone in something like 1999. He [...]

Jerks

So I’m pretty sure that a guy was masturbating in the sauna at my gym on Friday night. I say “pretty sure” because once I became aware of it (via the sound and the motion I could see out of my peripheral vision) I felt terribly awkward about looking over there to confirm. There were four other guys in the sauna besides me and the suspect — and no one seemed to be reacting at all. I put on a deliberately furrowed “what the heck is going on brow” and made eye contact with someone, hoping he’d say something like “Yeah, that guy next to you is jerking off — we’re cool with it” or something. After about 20 [...]

Mo Videos

Part of my job here at AOL is filming and producing videos for Mo Rocca (he has a blog with us). It is terrific fun. We make three a week, which means we’re making them fast and furious, just my speed. Sketch stuff at UCBT and video with Channel 102 stuff was decent preparation for this run-and-gun style. It doesn’t hurt to have Mo and his thousands of ideas, either.

Usually, the pieces are simple man-on-the-street or interviews with a political hook. Sometimes we choose to be silly with little justification, like with the one shown below. We were in a hurry for a third piece, so we filmed Mo getting a free shave and massage, then had [...]
