There are five short 1950s Jack Kirby comics stories available at Scans Daily. When you’re telling a whole story in four pages or so — you don’t waste a whole lot of time justifying things. Check out this awesome wackiness from “The Face Behind The Mask”:
Via Journalista, as usual.
- The Onion’s AV club lists the 10 most wonderfully weird moments in Fantastic Four comics. A great list — and I’m pleased to see that all but one are from either the original Jack Kirby run or the 1980s John Byrne run. Kevin and I think they missed one, though: the issue where the Sub-Mariner traps the FF by disguising himself as a movie producer and luring them to a trap-filled Hollywood set!
- Fantastic quote from the Justice League Unlimited cartoon: The Question tells Lex Luthor “Although my distaste for you as a human being is Brobdingnagian, what I’m about to do isn’t personal.” That is bad-ass that they said Brobdingnagian. Even better than when Batman [...]

A new Hellboy collection came out last week — a rare and beautiful treat. Kevin had warned me, so I made sure to swing by St. Mark’s Comics and grab my copy. I had heard of Hellboy for years but never bothered to check it out because it seemed like it would be dumb action comics aimed at would-be tough guys who are scared of girls. Cigar-smoking devil-man in a trenchcoat? No thanks. Too much like Wolverine and I haven’t been 12 years old in years. But when I heard there was a movie coming out, I asked Kevin, and he said it was pretty good, lent me all [...]
Good review of Jaime Hernandez new comics collection “Ghost of Hoppers.”. Thank you Kevin, for pointing it out to me. Someday I’ll lay down my full pitch of why the Hernandez Brothers make the best comics. They are as cool as the ocean, let’s leave it at that.
Did stand-up for the I Eat Pandas musical improv show last night. America, I know I’m biased because Eliza is in this show, but no foolin: you should go see it. It’s a phenomenon. The tiny Under St. Marks Theatre was packed and everyone in there was laughing and clapping with terrific joy. That show is magic. That it’s just three people in this sparse underground theatre makes it all the [...]
Man, look at that last entry! Will Hines all blabby-blab about the comic books! Don’t worry, true blog-ievers! I’m still going to wax ineloquently about matters of trivial import via tiny paragraphs!
I just finished reading Volume 4 of The Essential Fantastic Four — which collects issues 60-something through 80-something — back when it was done by Jack Kirby with Stan Lee. So awesome! Kirby never had a half-hearted idea in his life! I love it!
But more importantly, the night after I started reading it, I had a dream that Jack Kirby’s son (not sure if he actually had a son) was hunting me for sport. This was taking place in a hotel, down a hallway of conference rooms. I [...]
Went to St. Mark’s Comics yesterday. I hadn’t been to a comic shop in a while and to my delight there was a slew of new Hernandez Brothers stuff: three solo issues from Gilbert (Luba #9 and #10, as well as Luba Comics and Stories #5 or something) plus a new Love and Rockets loaded with stuff of Jaime’s. PLUS it seems I MISSED an issue of Love and Rockets — usually hard to do since they seem to come out every five months. But they seem to be producing them faster these days. “Faster” = five a year?
So I’ve been reading Love and Rockets nonstop since 1987. It’s strange having read a [...]
