If you using Final Cut 6 on your new iMac G5 (intel chip) to import footage and having trouble with log and capture — try disconnecting all external drives. Use only one firewire port and that’s for your camera. It seems to help.

I’m re-reading Love and Rockets since Kevin and Cat got me the complete series for Christmas. It is a joy. I include the above panel as an example of what I love about it. You should click on it to see the full view and notice: Maggie’s feet caught in the sheets, the folded pants on the floor, the perspective of the lamp on the nighttable, the realistic but imperfect bodies, the tenderness of the moment and the this-is-no-big-deal attitude of showing naked bodies. You should look at that then wish to God that every comics artist could draw like [...]
I got nothing folks. Here’s some things I considered blogging about:
- The best Chaplin movie to watch if you’ve only got time for one is City Lights.
- The best blog out there is kottke.org. You all probably knew that.
- For Christmas, among many other good gifts, I got the entire Love and Rockets series in their new small softcover format. Beautiful! Start with “Heartbreak Soup” and then “The Girl From H.O.P.P.E.R.S” if you’re new.
- I’ve had two impressive nights of over-drinking recently. During one of them, Mark Ruffalo and Ethan Hawke entered the bar, but I was more focused on getting Ben Schwartz to notice I was flipping him off. At the other, I promised a friend I would [...]
The latest issue of Gilbert Hernandez’ “Speak Of The Devil” came out. It’s a story of a high school gymnast who channels her frustrations with her life by becoming a peeping tom in her neighborhood. I don’t really like it, but I respect Gilbert for having the guts to keep trying new stories — and, unlike classic Gilbert, they are self-contained ones. And it’s high stakes and original (i.e. it doesn’t rely on comics invented fifty years ago like so many superhero comics) and is weird, and has lots of emotional and honest characters. It just isn’t a good STORY somehow. He makes great moments, but not great page-turners. But [...]
There is (was?) a British sitcom called The IT Crowd and we watch it at my office (someone bit torrents it or something). It is a very surreal look at 3 IT employees in an enormous corporation. Besides the awesome mix of surreal and deadpan humor — the main office is littered with Fantagraphic comic books. In some episode we watched yesterday, the main character (a woman named Jen) was sitting at her desk reading an issue of Love and Rockets. I yelped in my rolling chair with delight.
I have no graphics or video clips or screenshots to back any of this up. Just find the show and watch it.
Edited: I DO have screenshots and a video now!

Good review of Jaime Hernandez new comics collection “Ghost of Hoppers.”. Thank you Kevin, for pointing it out to me. Someday I’ll lay down my full pitch of why the Hernandez Brothers make the best comics. They are as cool as the ocean, let’s leave it at that.
Did stand-up for the I Eat Pandas musical improv show last night. America, I know I’m biased because Eliza is in this show, but no foolin: you should go see it. It’s a phenomenon. The tiny Under St. Marks Theatre was packed and everyone in there was laughing and clapping with terrific joy. That show is magic. That it’s just three people in this sparse underground theatre makes it all the [...]
Went to St. Mark’s Comics yesterday. I hadn’t been to a comic shop in a while and to my delight there was a slew of new Hernandez Brothers stuff: three solo issues from Gilbert (Luba #9 and #10, as well as Luba Comics and Stories #5 or something) plus a new Love and Rockets loaded with stuff of Jaime’s. PLUS it seems I MISSED an issue of Love and Rockets — usually hard to do since they seem to come out every five months. But they seem to be producing them faster these days. “Faster” = five a year?
So I’ve been reading Love and Rockets nonstop since 1987. It’s strange having read a [...]
