Here’s 15 Seconds, another UCB Comedy video I helped produce. Written by Chris Kelly. Directed by Mitch Magee. Shot/edited by Todd Bieber. Originally done by 27 Kidneys at Maude Night. Check it out!
This is one of my favorite sketches I’ve ever seen at UCBT, because it surprised me even though I’ve seen a million “bomb defusing” scenes/sketches before. We wanted to find a real warehouse to film in, but I couldn’t locate one with a location fee of under $400 — so we did this in the back hallways of the UCBT. Those hallways have been the subject of countless “let’s shoot this [...]
I’ve been Freedying on “This Will Be Our Year” by The Zombies. Mitch said the whole album is good and he is correct.
(edited to add the track)
Rob Lathan, Mitch Magee and myself did this video last weekend called “That Guy” — it’s a version of a piece we did for our old sketch group Game Face.

It may look like a mere two-minute conversation on the surface, but I believe it showcases Rob’s genius for halting, not-quite-helpful descriptions. And we get a surprise appearance from Frank Cramp, one of the most beloved characters in all of American cinema.
One day after writing about fake compliments, I asked Mitch Magee to critique a video I had just finished. I had time to make one more pass so now was the time, I said. He offered some suggestions and it plunged me into a horrible mood for about half an hour. Clearly, I WANT fake compliments as opposed to honest comments.
We went to see No Country For Old Men to patch things up. Violent nihilism can heal, people! (I liked this movie much more, even with knowing what was coming).
Part of my job here at AOL is filming and producing videos for Mo Rocca (he has a blog with us). It is terrific fun. We make three a week, which means we’re making them fast and furious, just my speed. Sketch stuff at UCBT and video with Channel 102 stuff was decent preparation for this run-and-gun style. It doesn’t hurt to have Mo and his thousands of ideas, either.
Usually, the pieces are simple man-on-the-street or interviews with a political hook. Sometimes we choose to be silly with little justification, like with the one shown below. We were in a hurry for a third piece, so we filmed Mo getting a free shave and massage, then had [...]
Brothers Hines lost at Cagematch last night to Chubby Chase. But we had the pleasure of losing by not too much, and losing to hilarious friends of ours, so it was a good fun night all around. Mitch and Kaveri were there, and we even guilted Danger Dyna Moe into attending. We showed a film of our dad holding up pictures of us in high school, which went over much bigger than Kevin and I expected! Nice job, Dad.
Thank you to everyone who came out to watch us and to Charlie Todd for booking us! Kevin and I have been studying, watching and performing shows at the UCBT for something like thirty years, but you know what? [...]
I like Doonesbury, especially the pre-1980 stuff. Two years ago Mitch Magee and I wrote this sketch. Picking it as our simplest unpublished work, we made it into this video. Mitch directed/edited. Paul Rondeau filmed. I hope we are not overwhelmed on YouTube with all of the other budding comedians’ sketches about “Doonesbury.” If you watch it, please enjoy Mitch’s awesome decision to cut to a close-up of the machine at choice moments. I love that.
Other news:
- Brothers Hines hits Cagematch tonight for the third week! We go up against the massive team Chubby Chase - a team [...]
Uploaded an old video to YouTube. Mitch and I made this with Jeff Blackman in Sept. 2002 for our UCBT sketch show “Citizen Nuts.”
- I have forgone coffee for tea, as a favor to my increasingly sensitive stomach. No more cylinder of Starbucks — now it’s a ceramic mug of Earl Grey. I’m sure I’ll go back to coffee — tea just tastes too THIN, somehow. But it’s welcome and easy detox to temporarily step into. Plus grabbing a mug of tea makes you feel like foppish member of the House of Lords each morning, even if your hair is sticking up and you’re wearing five year old blue jeans that have a baggy ass. It’s a fun contrast.
- I’m hardly on MySpace because Friendster took up too much of my time. It also tended to hurt more feelings than it helped. If I didn’t [...]
