Juno in Juneau

Finished editing the above Charlie Sanders sketch “Second Fattest Man In The World” (or “Charles Pottamus”) — a tour de force on stage which he and I have deliberately turned into a weird moody art piece! It’s like Orson Welles if Orson Welles ranted about the IHOP Tremendous Twelve. Charlie doing his “eating” noise of “yaminy yaminy” (at 3:10) is one of the most ridiculous sounds — please check it out.

I’m in a hotel in Minneapolis, waiting for the RNC to begin. I miss being home, but being in a hotel a lot is kinda cool — it’s [...]

In college (UConn, 1988-1992) my friends and I listened to a lot of Bobby Brown, Bel Biv DeVoe, Janet Jackson — all huge pop hits at the time. In high school I would never have dared listen to pop music as it was all very uncool. But part of growing up for me was being able to enjoy things that weren’t cool or fashionable to the smart crowd that I desperately wanted to join. Bobby Brown has got to among the least hip of all pop music but when I listen to his “Don’t Be Cruel” album all I really think is: I love this album. Music categorizers call that [...]

I’ve been Freedying on “This Will Be Our Year” by The Zombies. Mitch said the whole album is good and he is correct.

(edited to add the track)

The Hard Way

Three things I’ve learned the hard way. Tagged by Latham.

1. Don’t ever upload a major change to a financial company’s web site at the end of a working day, especially Friday. Your client is a dick, and will phone you all night. Do the change in the morning, or really late like midnight — so the calls don’t come in until you’ve gotten a good night’s sleep.

2. Always do something nice for Valentine’s Day. It doesn’t matter if the relationship is just starting, or if you know it’s all gonna crash and burn a week later. I once got a girl that I had been seeing a long time just a candy bar — knowing that I was doing [...]

  • ‘New Song’ by Howard Jones
  • ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ by The Cure
  • ‘Major Tom’ by Peter Schilling.

It occurs to me my musical taste may have become terrible. Or at least reverted to 1984.

Latest media obsession: Battlestar Galactica. I’m almost done with season one.
Latest project: Yoga
Latest I-feel-left-out-of-this: the NFL. I know nothing about football.
Latest song I am Freedying: “Dying Day” by Orange Juice and “This Charming Man” by The Smiths.

This post is just to knock the previous one back a bit.

Corn MoFirst of all, Corn Mo is God. He performed at the UCBT’s Halloween Party last night and kicked the shit out of everyone there. Gavin Speiller was walking through the back to put his bag down in the green room and was frozen, mid-stride, by the awesomeness and couldn’t move until it was over. The Last Car, the other band, was also awesome but none could deny the power of the headliner.

Ear PlugsI experienced the entire show in an altered state, not from drugs or alcohol but from wearing ear plugs. Corn Mo politely passed out a bin of [...]

Fights! And Morrissey!

Seven Fights is tonight, people. 8pm at UCBT. Let’s enjoy some sketch comedy.

Seven Fights Lifting Power

Saw Morrissey Friday night. He was great; I coulda used more Smiths, but who couldn’t? One of the best parts of the show was the strange film clips they play instead of house music. Among the footage: a stilted wardrobe test of James Dean and his co-star for East of Eden; a clip from the old tv show The Untouchables with Eliot Ness and his boys talking about a thug named ‘Morrissey’; and a German variety show featuring a performance from The New York Dolls.

I also loved how Morrissey’s [...]

Digital Camera Working

My digital camera seems to be working. Let’s get right to it, folks!

Top-Entry Litter Box

This top-entry litter box has changed my life. I had resigned myself that my kitchen would forever be a shallow sandbox of scattered cat litter flicks — but this contraption has returned it to looking like an Actual-Grown Up’s kitchen. Big thumbs-up to these things.

I’m pleased to report that my Windows 2000 machine at work did not need any software installed in order to extract photos from my camera. My iMac at home had no problem either, but I had expected that.

I’m going to see Morrissey tonight with Porter Mason. It should be ridiculous and fun. I told my [...]

I’m reading Our Band Could Be Your Life, and I love it! One chapter each on various underground indie bands of the 1980s — from Black Flag to Dinosaur, Jr. As Porter says, it’s candy for almost-music-nerds. Learn about the bands you’ve heard of, but never really heard. Enjoy these samples I’ve dug up:

Uber-dude anger: Black Flag, “Rise Above”

Likeable marxists: The Minutemen, “This Ain’t No Picnic”

Tape loop muscianship: Misson Of Burma, “Academy Fight Song”
