Old Newsstand

    Stuff:

    • Not that you need my opinion to believe this, but this season of Human Giant is going to be amazing. Carpet Monkey.
    • Separately, Philip K. Dick was right: the final war of humans will be fought by automated robots. The earth will be covered in slag!
    • Old newsstand. Pictured above.
    • Stand-up went well, thank you to Andrew Wright for booking me and to the nice audience for supporting my “secret to Life: give up” set. Mike Dobbins was there, who I hadn’t seen since R Bar days. I recommend seeing his set if you haven’t yet.

    Stand-Up, Improv

Did stand-up. Felt rusty, but it was a friendly crowd and a good line-up so it wasn’t a bad place to jump back in the pool. Then did an improv show at the homestead at 11pm. At stand-up shows, I feel an intense pressure to be as natural as possible — chatty and honest — and to avoid being uncool. At improv shows I feel a pressure to instantly HAVE ENERGY (not that you can always tell this from my performance) and to deliberately be uncool and silly — intelligence, naturalism and honesty comes second, and only because I’ve learned that it’s essential. It’s jarring to jump from one world to the next.

I’m not articulating it well. Any thoughts, [...]

    Connery and Danza

You all know Harold Night is tonight. So that’s good. But if you’re in Williamsburg and don’t feel like leaving, I’ll be dusting off my stand-up at a show at the Archers of Ha show at Spike Hill bar and grill right off the Bedford stop tonight at 9:30pm. THEN, if you need even more Will Hines Antics, I’m in the Blender at UCBT at 11pm. Lotsa Hines.

I did a rough cut of a Channel 102 show I’m submitting this month. It makes just slightly more sense then my last show The Fightin’ George Orwells, but with similar “I only have two hours to shoot this” production values. It features [...]

    The Bald Guy

Last night after stand-up, a guy in the audience told me I reminded him of some other comedian. He then proceeded to name every bald comedian I have ever heard of: “David Cross! No, wait, not him… Todd Barry! No, no… Dave Atell? Hmm, let me think…”

I don’t really mind, but I do forget that as I lose more and more hair that my lack of it becomes my defining physical characteristic. I become “the bald guy” the way that Hurley on Lost is “the fat guy” or the only black guy on a show is “the black guy.” (I was trying to come up with a specific example for that, but all I could think of was [...]

You’ve known for a long time that “Ghostbusters” sounds a lot like Huey Lewis and the News’ “I Want A New Drug.” I mean, there was a court case.

You also might have known that Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” sounds a lot like John Mellencamp’s “Jack and Diane.”

But did you know that Michael Jackson’s “Black or White” sounds like Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like the Wolf?” It DOES! It DOES!

Born AgainFirst of all, Comi-con was a blast. I performed on the Jedi Stage to an enthusiastic audience, about 50% of which were in Jedi costume. Thank you, Matt Little, for giving me the chance to have that previous sentence be something that is true. I wrote a special set of material, because I don’t know if I’ll have another chance to weave jokes about price guides and 1980s text adventures into one batch ever again. Thank God for Elephant Larry and A Week of Kindness who not only did funny stuff in the show, but performed the Good Karmic Work of watching everyone else so we didn’t all feel totally foolish doing [...]

No ParkingWhen I ride to work on the L train, I travel underneath the East River. It’s a long stretch for a subway ride. During that time, the train’s automated announcements run, almost all of which are telling the riders what they can’t do: don’t lean against doors, don’t forget to report suspicious packages, don’t cross between cars. I resent this barrage of lecturing during what would otherwise be a quiet ride.

But it is inspiring me to execute a photography project I’ve been wanting to do for years: Project No! I would take my camera and photograph every instance of the word “No” or “Don’t” that I encounter in between my house and my job. It [...]

I am performing stand-up tonight as part of this showcase. Maybe you could like come out and watch? The show is called “Low Profile” hosted by a bunch of silly people I am friends with. Details, arbitrarily boldfaced:

Low Profile (show), at Fat Baby (bar)
112 Rivington St near the corner of Essex
    Time: 8PM, cost: 5 bucks

    And a round-up of things:

    • I drink coffee mostly for the chance to run out and buy it, which is to say: for the breaks. It’s like a smoke break for non-smokers. I also believe that if I had ever smoked a cigarette even once I would be the most hard-core chain smoker you knew. It’s life-changing observations like this that you will be able [...]
