Finished editing the above Charlie Sanders sketch “Second Fattest Man In The World” (or “Charles Pottamus”) — a tour de force on stage which he and I have deliberately turned into a weird moody art piece! It’s like Orson Welles if Orson Welles ranted about the IHOP Tremendous Twelve. Charlie doing his “eating” noise of “yaminy yaminy” (at 3:10) is one of the most ridiculous sounds — please check it out.
I’m in a hotel in Minneapolis, waiting for the RNC to begin. I miss being home, but being in a hotel a lot is kinda cool — it’s [...]
I got my latest issue of Wholphin this week (a DVD of short films chosen by the McSweeney’s nerds) and the last film on it is called “On The Assassination of The President” by Adam Keker, and it is awesome. Even thought it’s mostly just narration and stills and is just six minutes long — it’s a conspiracy theory taken to the millionth degree and it scared the hell out of Tabitha and I. It was made by a documentary filmmaker in San Francisco with an awesome sense of humor and of creepiness.
I think it’s the low hum in the background.
Get Wholphin and watch it! (Or watch it [...]
During the Del Close Marathon, I ran over to Kenny’s Castaway to watch and perform in Terry Jinn’s Enormous Television 7. The comedians pick the songs, and Terry and his band perform them. It is a blast — supportive and enthusiastic audience, good performances, and smiles all around.
I performed “Hey Jealousy” by The Gin Blossoms.

Known mostly as a throw-away, that song is one I love truly. Always have! [...]
This happened a few months ago, but it’s funny so I’m posting about it now anyway.
Tabitha works at Spring Street Natural, so I met her there after her shift one Saturday afternoon. We decided we wanted coffee, and Balthazar is right next door to her restaurant. Despite being a snobby place for paparazzi-hungry celebrities, Balthazar also has pretty cheap and good coffee available to go, so we got two cups. We were going to Terry Jinn’s to watch Battlestar Galactica, and decided that we should bring something, and realized that Dean and Deluca was on the corner, so we got cookies there. Then we wanted a crossword puzzle, so we picked up a New York Times and got on the [...]
Tabitha and I were in northern California this past weekend — Modesto, to be specific. We saw the decorative overpass photographed above — with the motto “Modesto / Water Wealth Contentment Health.” Water? Why water? I knew southern California was once all desert but is water such a big deal up around the bay? A boast from the past, I assume?
Reminds me of that bridge in Trenton, NY that says “Trenton Makes, The World Takes” or whatever it is.
I saw this on the way to Tabitha’s place. It’s the exclamation point that really sells me on it. Although maybe, now that I think about it — an exclamation point would make any store name pleasantly ridiculous.
- Whole Foods!
- Virgin Records!
- Duane Reade!
Or is the just slightly too long wording that makes things funny?
- I Could Use Some Whole Foods
- Who Doesn’t Like Virgin Records?
- Wouldn’t Mind Stopping At Duane Reade
It’s both, probably.
This post made me realize I don’t go to a lot of stores.
Goodness gracious, everyone! It’s a new Sue Galloway video!
This was a sketch in Sue’s one-woman show (which goes up again this Friday 6:30pm at UCBT, by the by). It’s very funny, and Sue and I assumed it would be easy and painless to film and edit. It was painless to film (maybe not so much for Sue as she did 9 unbroken takes of this) but editing was… well, maybe not tough, but not quick. Let’s just say it was tough so the story doesn’t get too wishy-washy. Nine improvised takes does not make for easy cuts. But we figured it out.
Thanks to waiter Brandon for securing the [...]
Is there a food shortage? Or am I letting Drudge get to me? I remember as a kid hearing my Dad say “Brazil will someday be a superpower, because they can grow the most food” or something like that. It made sense even to my seven-year-old brain.
For Earth Day, my company gave out compact flourescent light bulbs to everyone. A fine idea, though since they were each wrapped in generous amouns of non-bio-degradable plastic — are we breaking even on helping the Earth?
I’m reading It Can’t Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis, a 1936 book which describes how America might elect its own version of Hitler. A weird fact: it was pitched as a TV series in the early [...]
I am only just now watching 30 Rock, at Tabitha’s insistence. Working my way through season 1 — the show is so good, it hurts me.
I’ve been asked to put together a series of ideas for news-based comedy. News-based comedy! Not only is it all people (with money) seem to want, it’s what people assume I’m good at. I may radiate “newsiness” but I’m as topical as Wacky Packs.
DeCoster and I did Oxygen Destroyer for Michelle’s Gilda’s Club benefit. Fun. People laughed.
The second (of this era of) Maude Night happened. I direct the team Mix Tape ‘98. It’s terrific fun. There were no Rick Roll parodies, which made me feel better about the world.
Cat update: Hopey is now enormously fat. [...]

Editor Dave Kovenetsky and I stand in to test lighting in the AOL Studio. I think this would make a great cover for the all keyboard prog rock album Dave and I want to make called “Hines and Kovenetsky: Journey to Aurora.”
Tabitha and I saw August: Osage County last night. Here’s a shocking opinion: I think it’s good! It long (3 hours and 10 minutes plus two ten minute intermissions) but you don’t notice it. The characters are instantly interesting all by themselves and also begin f*cking with each other in compelling ways. My one very minor quibble is that I started to be aware that everyone in the family [...]
