Regarding The President Should Be Allowed to Score Some 'Tang

This attitude expressed in the Clinton article is so immature I don't even know where to start. The charges in this particular instance are a long way from proved, and I have no idea who is telling the truth, but Clinton's history, use of words and body language almost demand suspicion. I believe that character is very important in a leader. If his family can't trust him, neither can anyone else, and Bill Clinton (and his wife) have certainly shown that to be the case many in matters of importance. The character issue goes beyond trust into judgement, self-control, concern for the welfare of others, and lots more.

Also, the Iran-Contra issue, while you might question the judgement of various individuals involved, was about a serious policy disagreement between the democratic congress and the republican administration. It had nothing to do with personal behavior. The administration was attempting to do something about a particularly heinous government in Nicaragua, which the Congress seemed to want to protect. Bad judgement, but not cheap dishonor.

None of this means that I approve of the way Kenneth Starr is handling things, but it doesn't excuse the POTUS.

By the way, check out Mike Barnicle's column in the Boston Globe today entitled "His arrogance is breathtaking." I basicly says that Clinton's problem is that he didn't have a father around when he was growing up to teach him how to be a man. Now that is an attitude I support!"

So you're saying the arrogance of a President lying about an affair is worse than a President secretly and illegally defying the policy of Congress? Interesting perspective. I think what's most frightening to me is this "moral outrage" so many people seem to have. If America is REALLY so puritan that they would cry to impeach the president because he can't keep it in his pants, then it won't be long before they're burning books and censoring private conversations. -ed.
